Costa Rica Guided Vacations

Im afraid to go to Costa Rica? Please give me some advice.?

My family booked a iternary to go to Costa Rica. While it seems to be a beautiful place and I am pleased to have the chance to go on vacation, but I am very nervous. I heard two horror stories people being robbed as a tourist. Story 1: three Americans traveling in a car from a rental car, and suddenly the race over a wire that pierced all their tires. Two men came to help the United States and robbed, stolen wallets, passports, money, luggage, etc. Story 2: A couple has rented a boat and a guide said it would be $ 30, and when they have reached half of the sea, the guide requires $ 100 and wouldnt get them back to shore. These stories scare me. I do not want to go. I do not want to pack something nice. What if someone steals my passport? I'll be stuck forever. "I can have a safe to keep my staff belongs to a bank in San Jose, when I get there? What tourists are the statistics that have been stolen during his visit Costa Rica?

I lived in Alajuela, Costa Rica for one year. The closest I came was being robbed a taxi driver tries to take the scenic route to get more rights. I am very light and my Spanish is terrible. I felt safer in my home town CR. I was careful, but not excessively.
