What to do in San Jose, Costa Rica and how to get to Arenal center?

We went to Costa Rica for a vacation in one week. First we will be in Quepos, for four days of sailing, fishing, mountain biking, then four days in San Jose, Costa Rica. Even if I'm in downtown San Jose, What are some to see and do in San Jose or in the region. I am also interested in going to Panama, but do not know if I have enough time, or that we were trying to go to La Fortuna, the sand. Nature Air and Sansa are stuffed and can not fly in those days. Here is my question …. what is cheapest and best way SJ Travel Center Arenal, La Fortuna? and complex is the best place to stay, with a budget in mind? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

I According Dougga. The museums are the best part of San Jose. In addition, I took the public bus from San Jose to La Fortuna times. Nevermore. The price was correct (I think that cost us about $ 5.00 per person, maybe a little), but took an eternity, and it was very uncomfortable. Now often hire private transportation to take place approximately $ 130 for a maximum of 5 persons. Ideal for work around your schedule. You can also take a shuttle for about $ 40.00 a person. Less expensive for smaller groups, but according to a strict timetable. Or you can take a taxi. Never rent a car in CR. The behavior is different from what is in the States. The roads are not as well maintained. You are not always guaranteed to have a good signage on the roads. And accident rates in San Jose are very high (I think my cab driver told me last third in the world). I know people who have done but I prefer my adventures in the desert, lol.
