History of Jamaica
There are many places online where you can learn about the history of Jamaica and was certainly a very colorful. Before the arrival of Columbus in 1494 only inhabitants of the island were the Arawaks. These small tribal communities living on land and sea for several centuries until the arrival of Columbus and the Spaniards. Unfortunately, once contacted Spanish has radically changed their lives, it took only 70-80 years for these communities to disappear completely.
The Spanish occupation remained in Jamaica from 1494-1655 and provide a basis to support the Americas. Although Kingston is now the capital of the islands during the Spanish occupation was its administrative center Santiago de la Vega, now known as the Spanish Village.
The reason that ended the Spanish occupation in 1655, it has been captured by the English, which was led by Admirals Penn and Venables. The Spaniard did little to defend against invasion English as he held little meaning for them.
Although initially used English labor hired to help work the plantations sugar have been established. So decided to start importing slaves from Africa and many of which originate in Jamaica are the direct reductions Many African slaves brought by the English. During the period when slaves were brought from Africa (1655 to1838) 15,000 of them are died in Jamaica alone.
So as you can see the history of Jamaica is interesting.
