What is the currency used in Costa Rica?

I am traveling to Costa Rica and I would like some information as to whether the use Credit Card / ATM, or in U.S. dollars when buying or paying bills colones in Costa Rica? I said it is more expensive use credit cards because of the surcharge. U.S. dollars are in Costa Rica? Either I need my purse colones U.S. dollars? Thank you for any info. Deb

If you have an international ATM card with a credit card or debit card, you'll be much better because they have to carry much cash around. U.S. $ are generally accepted where you will get. Costa Rica is for tourists, by the fact that We have about 2 million tourists each year. Do not change dollars for colones at the airport. Gives you no right to exchange rates. Go to the bank and change their settlers. If you go to TicosLand site, we have an exchange rate that will increase the rate of exchange official currency of Costa Rica and other banks. You know, it might be more expensive than using a credit card, but as I said, you can use your international debit card, if you have one. Hope that helps. For further information on Costa Rica, visit the website TicosLand.
