How can we get our money stolen by Payless Car Rental?

My husband and I were in Costa Rica for a week and decided rent a car to Payless for a few days. On the way to San Jose to La Fortuna, our car breaks down on the edge of the road. Only in neutral and then do not again. It was nothing that we did. Now, the company charged us $ 2,500 to repair the car, indicating that our coverage insurance they bought did not cover negligence.
