You can travel to Costa Rica by car on highway Panameican. The country shares borders with Nicaragua and north through the checkpoint PeƱas Blancas border. At the southern border with Panama, is passed through the border at Pasa Canoas. En route you pass through many small towns and villages, you have very aware of speed limits in these areas. There are random police checks for seat belts because it is against the law to drive without using a seat belt in Costa Rica. Most roads in Costa Rica are not paved and some are in a terrible state that could take some time to travel a short distance.
Buses run from Nicaragua, Panama, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala, and there is ample network across the country bus fares reasonable. While buses do not go as planned, often take longer than expected to reach their destinations. It is very safe to travel by bus to travel to Costa Rica and do not speak Spanish, but will have no difficulty.
A ferry travels Costa Rica twice daily, usually in the morning, Los Chiles in Nicaragua. The cost is very cheap. There are also smaller cruise ships that carry about 100 passengers Panama to Costa Rica.
